Is it possible to think a modern city without film or film without urban modernity? In the publication "Steps of the City :: Media Images :: Zagreb 1957 – 2017" that question of ontology of a cinematic city is reduced to the question of gender representation in the diegetic systems of the films with an anchor in the chronotope of the socialist Zagreb. Their spatial and symbolic axis is today's City of Vukovar Street, the scenery of never finished Zagreb's "center", a hybrid of modernism and never uprooted suburbia living together.

With the texts of the film theoretician Petra Belc, art historian and theoretician Tamara Bjažić, journalist and researcher Vesna Kesić, and editor's note by the cultural anthropologist Sonja Leboš, this little book commences to act in the huge field of epistemological processes coming both form film and urban studies, points to the potential of that interweaving for the understanding of urban core of a city, and offers fresh readings of the Croatian film classics such as "Monday or Tuesday"/"Ponedjeljak ili utorak" (1966, dir. Vatroslav Mimice), "Violet"/"Ljubica" (1978, dir. Krešo Golik), and "Rhythm of a Crime"/"Ritam Zločina" (1981, dir. Zoran Tadić) in that interdisciplinary key.
